Alma Fonda Fina: A Pre-Michelin Star Experience

Kristin Hess

Tucked away on a charming corner in Denver, Alma Fonda Fina is a (not so) hidden gem that exudes warmth and intimacy. Even before it earned a Michelin star, this restaurant captivated us with its cozy ambiance and exceptional cuisine.

A Cozy, Yet Bright Oasis:

The intimate space, adorned with terracotta hues, lush plants, and natural wood, creates a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. With just a handful of tables and a cozy bar, Alma Fonda Fina feels like a secret escape. The warm lighting, earthy tones, and touches of pink and deep orange create a sense of relaxation while dining.

Securing Your Spot:

Even before its Michelin recognition, snagging a reservation at Alma Fonda Fina was a bit of a feat. We managed to secure a spot at the bar with just two days' notice, but now, with the added prestige of a Michelin star, booking in advance is essential.

What We Ordered:

Cocktails: We started with some drinks, of course. Martin tried the Avocado Margarita, which was made with Herradura Reposado tequila and fresh avocado puree – he said it was amazing. Kristin opted for the Hibiscus Margarita with Milagro Blanco tequila and hibiscus agave which was very light and refreshing.

Alma Fonda Fina's menu is full of creative and delicious dishes, and we couldn't resist trying a whole bunch of them!

  • Camote Asado: This agave-roasted sweet potato with fennel whipped requesón and broken salsa macha dish was amazing! It was sweet, savory, and a little spicy all at the same time. Martin even said it was the best starter he's ever had.

  • Aguachile De Chile Fresno: The adobo-seared hamachi was remarkably fresh, and the roasted pineapple puree provided a delightful sweetness that balanced the heat of the chile fresno.

  • Tostada De Atun: The applewood-smoked tuna melted in our mouths, complemented perfectly by the creamy avocado (Martin got this on the side as we know Kristin is allergic), tangy chicatana mayonnaise, and spicy salsa macha.

  • Sope De Asada: The tender CAB filet medallion was a standout, elevated by the rich flavors of the frijoles de la olla and the refreshing cactus plant salad.

  • Taco De Suadero: The 12-hour confit Colorado brisket was incredibly tender and flavorful, enhanced by the zesty salsa de arbo.

  • NY Strip Al Arriero:  Perfect for sharing, the NY Strip was cooked to perfection and accompanied by a rich arriero sauce, sweet buttered cippolinis, and roasted green onions.

Stand-Out Dish:

While each dish was a masterpiece, the Camote Asado truly stole the show. It had such a delicious mix of flavors and textures – we'll definitely be ordering it again!

Would We Recommend It?

Without a doubt! Alma Fonda Fina is a must-visit for anyone seeking an intimate and unforgettable dining experience. The combination of exceptional food, intimate ambiance, and attentive service makes it a true gem in Denver's culinary landscape.

Who We Recommend It For:

  • Date night:  Absolutely. The cozy vibes are perfect for a romantic evening.

  • Dinner with a friend:  Definitely. Share some delicious food and catch up in a relaxed setting.

  • Want to impress someone from out of town? This place will do the trick! The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is unique.

P.S. Be sure to check out their sister restaurant, Cozobi Fonda Fina (they also have Camote Asado on the menu!), in Boulder, for another taste of their culinary magic!
