Edinburgh is a city that feels like it’s been plucked straight from a storybook. With its winding streets, historic pubs, and stunning views, it’s a destination that perfectly blends old-world charm with a modern, vibrant energy. After my trip, I’ve put together a guide to help you experience some of the best the city has to offer. Here is my Guide to Edinburgh Scotland: and must-try food spots!
Where to Stay in Edinburgh
Market Street Hotel is my top recommendation. It's an ideal base for exploring the city, located right across from the main train station. The rooms are on the smaller side but are incredibly nice, featuring comfortable beds and great hair products. The hotel also offers free snacks and drinks, and you get a complimentary glass of champagne at their rooftop lounge. Breakfast can be added on for an extra cost.
Cost: Around $300 per night
Vibe: Modern, comfortable, and chic
Location: City center, right next to the Royal Mile
The Best Coffee & Pastries
You don't need to know any other bakery than Lannan. It is, without a doubt, the best bakery I have ever been to! They may have a line, so make sure you have an hour or so to spare, but trust me, it is worth it.
For coffee, here are some great options:
The Milkman: Located nearby the Market Street Hotel, it's a cozy and convenient spot.
Beatnik: Known for its high-quality pour-overs.
Cafen Specialty Brew Coffee: A great spot for a carefully crafted cup.
Ante Coffee: A local favorite.
Where to Drink (From Cozy Pubs to Cocktail Bars)
Pubs:
Captain's Bar: An authentic spot with live Scottish music, perfect for a traditional experience.
Kay's Bar: A very old, historic pub with a cute exterior. It's small inside, but the traditional atmosphere is worth the visit.
Jolly Judge: A cozy pub with a classic Scottish vibe.
White Hart Inn: A great, traditional pub.
Wee Vault: A classic pub to check out.
The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant: Established in 1902, it has a famous mahogany bar and was once a meeting place for writers and journalists. The haggis bon-bons are a must-try.
Cocktail Bar:
Hey Palu: The go-to spot for cocktails.
Wine Bar:
Spry Wine: A bright, airy spot for natural wine and delicious snacks. I LOVED this find!
A Restaurant for Every Occasion
The Little Chartroom: This is the perfect spot for an upscale tasting menu. The food is incredible, and the desserts are truly amazing.
Bonnie & Wild: A great food hall where you can just grab a bite with many different stalls to choose from.
PIGGS: If you are craving tapas, this is the place to go.
Aizle: A fantastic choice for modern cuisine.
Timberyard: Another great modern British restaurant.
The Palmerston: This is a crowd-pleaser that won’t disappoint.
Heron: An excellent upscale dining option.
Mirin: This was my favorite restaurant the whole trip! They serve small Asian plates that are so good. Be sure to get a reservation as this place only has a few tables.
Can't-Miss Activities
Walk the Royal Mile: This is the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, with a long, charming street connecting the castle and the palace.
Bike Tour: A great way to see the city and its surroundings.
